OVERVIEW

We had a certain goal for this project, which was to create a working 3rd person hack and slash game where the player had to fight mythical beasts and creatures, of increasing difficulty, in one on one gladiatorial combat.

We wanted the game to play similar to Dark Souls, where the player is significantly weaker compared to his foe, forcing him to avoid, dodge or block the opponents attacks, while using windows of opportunity to strike at the foe and slowly whittle it down.

In terms of player customisation, we included a simple equipment system which lets the player choose a weapon, ultimately affecting his/her play style. We thought this would be a great addition, as it would provide varied play styles and ultimately replay value to our game.

Finally, we added a progression system, where defeating one foe unlocks the next, with progress being saved after exiting/re-entering the game.

OUR AIMS FOR THIS PROJECT

  • Create a Gladiatorial game in UE4 with working balanced combat, character customization, and a progression system that gets progressively more difficult, in the space of 3 months.

  • Manage the project well, creating certain goals and milestones for each week for us to adhere by, and adjust the plan accordingly based on meeting or not meeting these goals.

  • Adequately prepare for weekly presentations with tutors, where weekly progress was to be reported (see example presentation document in links above)

  • Use user feedback and questionnaire results to adjust the game according. Stick to the requirements of our user demographic.
